Types of fades, explained

Skin fade (bald fade)

The blend goes all the way down to bare skin at the bottom, so the sides start at nothing and build up into your hair. It's the cleanest, sharpest look of the bunch and shows off a crisp line-up. Great if you want maximum contrast and don't mind that it grows out faster, so you'll be back in the chair a little more often to keep it tight.

Taper fade

A softer, more conservative version where only the edges (around the ears and the back of the neck) are tapered short, while the rest keeps more length. Nothing goes down to skin unless you ask. It suits guys who want a neat, professional look that still grows out gracefully, and it's an easy first fade if you've never had one.

Low, mid and high fade

This isn't a separate cut, it's where the fade starts on the side of your head. A low fade begins just above the ear for a subtle, understated finish. A mid fade starts around the temple for a balanced look most people land on. A high fade starts up near the crown for a bold, dramatic contrast with lots of length on top. Any of these can be a skin fade or a taper, it's a dial, not a different haircut.

Drop fade

A fade that curves, or "drops," lower behind the ear instead of staying level all the way around. It follows the natural shape of your head and pairs especially well with longer or textured styles on top, like a quiff or curls. A solid pick if you want something a touch more modern than a standard straight fade.

Burst fade

The fade rounds out in a semicircle around the ear and tapers into the back, often leaving a bit of length down the nape. It's a popular match for mohawks, faux hawks and textured crops, and it keeps things looking sharp at the ear without taking the whole back down short. Good if you want a distinctive, style-forward look.
